mike nickerson’s hope

‘nevertheless, a small but growing number of people are making the effort to reform their lifestyles in order to minimize their negative impacts. while individual actions can seem inconsequential compared to the magnitude of change required, they have an effect far greater than the actual reductions to social impacts and resource flows. actions should not be avoided because the problem looks too big. personal actions are testimonial to the larger vision. they help pioneer new patterns of behaviour that can inform and inspire others, as well as reinforce the will to press for change at the structural level. when actions are based on the realization that life offers more when one gets off the treadmill of accelerating earning and spending, personal rewards abound in terms of stress reduction, free time and increased opportunities to enjoy life.’
