‘what was it worth?’

‘it looked as if the developers meant to fill in the entire marsh. some of the florida birdwatchers had been pushing for a sanctuary here, to protect this colony [of cape sable sparrows], but i guessed that impetus would fade now that the AOU [american ornithologists’ union] had lumped this bird with the common seaside sparrow. even as an endangered species, the cape sable sparrow had not aroused much local interest. what was it worth as a mere endangered sub-species?’ kingbird highway 160-161
